Specific challenges included: High reliance on manual processing for key financial and tax operations, increasing the risk of human errors. Complex accounts receivable workflows requiring accountants to manually review and split invoices across multiple internal entities. Time-intensive tax compliance processes, such as preparing T112 Corporate Income Tax Forms, which required significant manual effort for accuracy and regulatory compliance. OMERS needed a scalable AI-powered automation solution that could streamline these processes, increase accuracy, and empower employees with more time for meaningful work.

Solution

OMERS partnered with UiPath to implement AI-powered automation across key financial and operational functions. The organization took a "crawl, walk, run" approach, first demonstrating simple automation use cases before expanding adoption company-wide. UiPath's Document Understanding, AI Center, and Action Center played a key role in transforming manual workflows. These tools automated data extraction, classification, and validation, significantly reducing time spent on administrative tasks. One of the most impactful implementations was in Accounts Receivable, where UiPath automated the end-to-end invoice processing workflow. The system now: Scans incoming invoices Interprets financial data Automatically assigns billing amounts to the correct internal entities Issues invoices without human intervention A similar transformation was applied to tax processes, where UiPath robots automated the preparation of T112 Corporate Income Tax Forms. These bots reviewed trial balance data, uploaded it into tax preparation software, and conducted compliance checks against provincial regulations. The system then compared results to previous filings and flagged discrepancies for review. By leveraging UiPath’s built-in machine learning models, the automation self-learns and adapts over time, reducing the need for frequent retraining by IT teams.
